Species Extent (New Mexico)

General Description

Mountain Plover (Charadrius montanus) is a medium-sized (21-23 cm) shorebird that breeds in the Rocky Mountain region and winters near the U.S.-Mexico borderlands. They inhabit the open shortgrass prairie and are associated with prairie dog (Cynomys spp.) towns and other areas of short vegetation suitable for breeding. The decline of the native prairie ecosystem has caused population declines.
