General Description
Varied Bunting (Passerina versicolor) is a small (11-14 cm) songbird named for its varied blue, red, and purple plumage (breeding male). The core of their distribution is in southern Mexico, but during the breeding season they will expand to northern Mexico and just across the U.S.-Mexico border into Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. In southern New Mexico, they are found in dense mesquite (Prosopis spp.) stands and associated growth in canyon bottoms. They feed on seeds and insects.
