Requesting Sensitive Species Data

About Requesting NHNM Data

NHNM relies primarily on contracts and grants from agency partners to conduct targeted biodiversity research and analysis, as well as to design, develop, and manage biodiversity information products and services. Some of our contracts include funding to support a number of free public services (see Option 1 and Option 2 below); however, these funds are not enough to accommodate the volume of requests we receive. To continue providing high-quality data and services to the public, we charge modest fees that help cover our operating costs. We truly appreciate your understanding and support.

Discover how NHNM can help you access high-quality biodiversity data through several flexible options detailed below.

NHNM Information Request Options:

NHNM Website

Free

Data is available to the public, free of charge, at NHNMs Sensitive Species Data Search webpage. Also explore biodiversity data and conservation tools from the New Mexico Conservation Information System.

Free data includes:

  • Lists of species per county, watershed, or ecoregion
  • Lists of species tracked by NHNM

New Mexico Environmental Review Tool (NM-ERT)

Free

NHNM in partnership with New Mexico Department of Game & Fish and NatureServe have created an online tool where you can submit your area of interest and receive a response letter listing any sensitive/listed species in the area along with recommendations. The ERT utilizes NHNM data along with other wildlife data layers to provide feedback to users.

Requesting Spatial Data (Requires Data License Agreement)

Option 3 data requests include spatial data and most require signature of a Data License Agreement. Requests may be received by species or by geographic area or both. Spatial data and associated tabular reports for spatial data requests are priced as follows.

A search of our databases, consultation with our biologists where appropriate, and spatial data will be provided for a prorated fee based on the number of Element Occurrences (EOs – subpopulation records per species) PLUS the base fee ($350).

Example Request for 100 EOs:

  • 100 (EOs wanted) * $50,000 (cost for all EO locations)/16,411 (current number of EOs) + $350 (base fee) = $654.67
