General Description
Jaguar (Panthera onca) is a large (up to 1.9 m) cat that is distributed through much of South and Central America with the northern edge of its distribution extending into the states bordering Mexico. The last observed jaguar in New Mexico was in 1997 in the Peloncillo Mountains of Hidalgo County. They live in a variety of habitats, preferring lowland wet habitats like swampy savannas and tropical rain forests; though historically they also occurred in upland habitats.
