Species Extent (New Mexico)

General Description

Rio Grande Silvery Minnow (Hybognathus amarus) is a small (up to 9 cm) minnow that historically was one of the most abundant and widespread fish in the Rio Grande basin, but now occupies roughly 5% of its former range. They are still present on the Rio Grande from Cochiti Dam to the headwaters of Elephant Butte Reservoir, and an experimental population exists in the Rio Grande and Pecos rivers in Texas. They inhabit water with slow to moderate flow in sections of the Rio Grande that have perennial flows of water.
