General Description
Red-headed Woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus) is a medium-sized (19-23 cm) woodpecker that is readily identifiable by its bright red head, white belly, black back, and bold white patches on the wings. They are found east of the Rocky Mountains in the U.S. They inhabit open woodlands and catch insects by hammering in wood, hunting for them on the ground, and snagging them out of the air.
