Behind the city open space headquarters is a Gunnison's prairie dog (Cynomys gunnisoni) town about the size of a football field. Prairie dog towns can be recognized by their large mounds of bare dirt with large holes. Gunnison's prairie dogs are active from March to October and are easily seen browsing for food and socializing outside of the mounds. Reservations are required; call Bonnie Dills at (505) 873-6620. Head south on Broadway and make a left on Journal Pavilion Road. Keep to the left forks of the road until the road ends at open space headquarters.
